FARMERS’ MARKETS

Marchés des Producteurs de Pays

As people across the globe become more interested in healthy, sustainable eating, Farmers’ markets are becoming more popular. But here in the fertile lands of the Dordogne Valley, these markets have been a beloved part of the culture long before the trend caught on. Farmers have always brought their produce straight from the fields to the local community, and during the summer months, these markets spring to life in villages all over the region.

FOOD WITH A FACE

At these markets, you’ll be buying directly from the same people who grew the food. It’s easy to spot these markets by their logo – Marchés de Producteurs de Pays. Typically starting in the late afternoon, they offer a delightful selection of fresh, seasonal produce—mostly fruits and vegetables, often organic—alongside locally crafted wines, boutique beers, breads, and cheeses. You can also discover new wines perfect for a summer BBQ or pick up some artisanal pâtés and cured meats for a picnic.

Some markets go a step further, offering barbecues and seating areas where you can enjoy your purchases right away. You’ll also find AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) certified wines and other local specialties, guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of what you buy. Don’t miss out on regional delicacies like strawberries, walnuts, Rocamadour cheese, or the famous Quercy Melon—a melon with tender, juicy orange flesh that’s perfect on its own, with cured ham, or in canapés with cherry tomatoes for a light aperitif.

EXCLUSIVELY HOMEGROWN

Whatever you choose to buy at a Farmers’ Market, you’re not just getting fresh, tasty, often organic products—you’re also connecting with the people who grow your food. This is sustainable and environmentally friendly food production at its best, with guaranteed freshness that lets you indulge without guilt.

All products sold at these markets must be made or grown by the producers themselves, with no reselling allowed. Everything is created right on the farm, meaning the farmers you meet are also the processors and sellers of their goods.

Eat a meal right on the spot too

Evening markets, held only in summer months, are reserved exclusively for these producers. They provide a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to gather in a festive and fun atmosphere. Enjoy a freshly prepared meal made from local produce right on the spot, and maybe take a few goodies home as well!
