Château de Val

A Fairytale Fortress by the Lake

Combining elegance and a stunning environment, the Château de Val is one of the best-preserved fortresses of the Upper Dordogne Valley, where visitors can enjoy both history and loads of outdoor activities.

An enchanting castle that nearly took the plunge

Imagine a medieval castle perched high on a rocky spur, its majestic silhouette reflected in a shimmering lake. The Château de Val is a stunning castle straight out of a storybook! Nestled in the picturesque Upper Dordogne Valley, this 15th-century fortress is one of the best-preserved historical gems in the region. Once overlooking a vast valley, Château de Val now finds itself almost island-like, surrounded by the tranquil waters of the huge lake of Bort-les-Orgues. Saved from the brink of submersion in the 1950s, it’s a living legend that almost took a plunge into oblivion!

A dramatic rescue and a stunning transformation

When the Bort-les-Orgues dam was built, the Château de Val’s future hung in the balance.Water levels rose, threatening to engulf the entire structure. But, like any great hero in a medieval saga, the castle was spared! Now, it sits gracefully on a small peninsula, its six distinctive towers standing tall against a backdrop of sparkling blue. The castle’s reflection in the lake adds to its fairy-tale charm, making it a must-see for history buffs, photography enthusiasts, and dreamers alike.

Exploring the Château

Entering Château de Val is like stepping into a bygone era. Visitors are invited to wander through its grand halls filled with Gothic-style furniture, and climb the monumental staircase to the Chemin de Ronde, where they can stroll along the ramparts like a lord or lady of old.

A must-do is the Chapel of Saint Blaise, a serene sanctuary with beautiful detailing of a time when the castle echoed with the prayers of its residents.
