The Most Beautiful Villages of France

Icons of Timeless Charm

In order to be classified as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” more than just aesthetic appeal is required.
Each village must meet strict criteria, ensuring that they preserve their unique architectural heritage. But these places are far from being open-air museums. The label promotes active participation in the villages’ economic, social and cultural development, ensuring a vibrant future alongside their historical past.

Rural charm

When you think of France’s most enchanting destinations, the villages that make up the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ are at the top of the list.

These villages offer more than just historical significance—they are living postcards, meticulously preserved and full of character, inviting travelers to experience France’s rural beauty at its finest.

Established in 1982 by Charles Ceyrac, the initiative was born in Collonges-la-Rouge, one of the most iconic villages in the Dordogne Valley. Today, 180 villages across 14 regions proudly wear this title, representing the very best of French heritage.

A Glimpse into Living History

What makes these villages exceptional isn’t just their age, but their breathtaking beauty, frozen in time yet alive with local culture.

To earn the prestigious label, each village must meet strict criteria, preserving an outstanding architectural heritage set against a backdrop of pristine natural landscapes. From the turrets and timbered houses to the cobblestone lanes that have seen centuries of stories unfold, these villages offer visitors a glimpse into a world that feels untouched by modern life, yet still buzzing with local activity.

The Dordogne Valley

A Haven of Beautiful Villages

The Dordogne Valley is one of the richest regions for these villages, boasting over 20 that have received the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” label. For visitors looking to immerse themselves in authentic French beauty, this area is paradise. Each village offers its own blend of charm, from riverside retreats to hilltop fortresses.

Take La Roque-Gageac, for example—a stunning village of golden houses nestled between cliffs and the Dordogne River. A little farther on, the pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, one of the most spectacular sights in France, is perched dramatically on a cliffside.

Ségur-le-Château, another standout, is a picture-perfect medieval village with half-timbered houses, historic towers, and a castle in ruins that still commands the landscape. Not far away, Saint-Robert is also a must-stop, particularly during the wonderful Classical Music Festival. Meanwhile, Turenne, with its castle keep standing sentinel over the rooftops, offers panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Martel, with its seven towers, is a real treat. This former merchant town retains its bustling energy with markets in the shadow of medieval houses. Then there’s Carennac, with its rich mix of Renaissance and medieval architecture, where you can lose yourself in the labyrinth of little alleyways.

Further West, Saint-Jean-de-Côle offers a peaceful retreat. With its picturesque bridge, it’s one of those villages where every corner feels like a painting. And for those interested in the medieval bastides, Monpazier is an extraordinary example. The well-preserved grid layout and lively markets make Monpazier a perfect snapshot of French life from a bygone era.

Beauty around every corner

While these villages are full of historical importance, their true allure lies in their remarkable beauty. Each village is beautifully preserved, offering visitors the chance to walk through living history. But don’t expect a dull, overly curated experience. These villages are as alive as ever, with locals going about their day-to-day lives and artisanal shops, cafés, and markets adding a lively touch.

Imagine sipping a coffee in a village square surrounded by golden stone houses and half-timbered façades, or enjoying a local wine while gazing at a castle perched above. These places offer not only beauty but also the perfect atmosphere for a slow-paced holiday, where you can unwind and fully absorb the incredible surroundings.

In all seasons

Planning a holiday around the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’ in the Dordogne Valley is a trip through some of France’s most scenic and well-preserved landscapes. From exploring medieval streets to hiking up to castle ruins or simply relaxing by the riverbanks, these villages are ideal for visitors who want to enjoy the best of the French countryside.

With weekly markets, local festivals and the ever-present artisanal shops, each village offers a different experience, often just a few kilometres apart.

The beauty of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’ doesn’t fade with the seasons. Whether you’re visiting in spring or in summer, when village squares are bustling with life, or in the quieter months of autumn and winter, these villages retain their charm year-round.

Each season offers its own unique experience, from lively summer markets to the peaceful, misty mornings of winter, making the Dordogne Valley a year-round destination for those seeking beauty and culture.

Living Villages

Not Just Tourist Spots

What sets these “Most Beautiful Villages” apart isn’t just their stunning facades, but the life they contain. From summer festivals to local farmers’ markets, these villages are bustling with energy. These communities invite visitors to engage with the culture firsthand. When you stroll through Rocamadour or pause for a coffee in Monpazier, you’re not just soaking in the beauty—you’re stepping into places full of history and character.

The ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ label is about more than safeguarding the past—it’s about ensuring these villages continue to thrive. These villages are leaders in rural development, proving that historical preservation can coexist with modern progress.

They represent the future of rural France: a future rooted in beauty, diversity, and sustainable growth.
