Château de Turenne

Atop one of France's Most Beautiful Villages

Once home to one of France’s most powerful dynasties, the Château de Turenne and the village below are full of charm and grandeur, with towers and gardens, in an extraordinary site suspended between heaven and earth.

A fortress high

Perched high above the village of Turenne, the Château de Turenne is a striking fortress that stands as a testament to centuries of history.

Located in the heart of the Corrèze, just 15 kilometers south of Brive-la-Gaillarde, Turenne is celebrated as one of the “ Most Beautiful Villages of France”.

The castle’s commanding position atop a rocky spur offers visitors breathtaking views and a rich immersion into the medieval heritage of this picturesque part of the Dordogne Valley.

A Thousand Years of Power

The origins of Château de Turenne trace back over a millennium. The first mention of the “castrum” of Turenne dates to 767 when it was seized by King Pepin the Short and granted to the first Count of Quercy. Initially, it was likely a wooden Carolingian camp but the foundation of the current stone structure began under the Comborn family in the 10th century.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle played a central role in the Viscounty of Turenne, a powerful feudal state that enjoyed a unique degree of autonomy within the Kingdom of France. The Viscounts of Turenne governed their lands with nearly sovereign authority, minting their own coins, raising armies, and even holding courts.

This remarkable independence lasted until 1738 when the Viscounty was sold to King Louis XV, marking the end of its quasi-sovereign status. To curb its influence, Louis XV ordered the partial dismantling of the castle, leaving only the majestic César and Trésor towers standing today.

The Viscounty of Turenne: An Autonomous Principality

At its peak in the 15th century, the Viscounty of Turenne spanned a vast territory, covering parts of Limousin, Périgord and Quercy, with a population of around 100,000 people. It included 18,500 settlements,111 parishes, and 1,200 villages. Strategically located on major trade routes and the pilgrimage path to Rocamadour, the Viscounty was both a guardian of the region and a hub of cultural exchange.

The Viscounts of Turenne, from the Comborn to the La Tour d’Auvergne families, ruled with remarkable autonomy. They paid a nominal tribute to the French crown but were otherwise free from royal taxation. Their independent rule fostered a distinct identity for the Viscounty, which minted its own coins and upheld local laws and customs until its integration into the French kingdom.

Exploring the Château

The Château de Turenne, built on a rocky outcrop 350 meters above sea level, sits above the historic alleyways of the medieval village, offering stunning views over the Dordogne Valley. The surviving parts of the castle include the 13th-century César Tower and the 14th-century Clock Tower. The latter houses two vaulted rooms: the Guard Room, with its impressive fireplace, and the majestic Salle du Trésor, standing ten meters high.

The castle’s architecture, combining red sandstone and Turenne limestone, reflects the rich history and artistry of the region. Visitors can stroll through the medieval courtyard, now transformed into a magnificent hanging garden, and explore the castle’s terraces and newly opened rooms, including the “treasure room.”

A Garden Suspended Between Heaven and Earth

The hanging garden of Château de Turenne is a serene oasis blending French formal garden designs with large English-style parterres. Pine and cypress trees lend the garden a southern charm, while boxwood and flowerbeds create a tranquil, relaxing space. Created in 1920,the garden replaced the vineyards that once filled the medieval courtyard, offering visitors a delightful spot to make the most of the incredible panoramic views.

The garden is also part of an ongoing eco-friendly project, emphasising biodiversity and sustainable practices, such as rainwater collection and organic gardening methods.
