The perfect spot for unwinding

Half way between Bergerac and Sarlat, the picturesque village of Limeuil is one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’ and it’s easy to see why.

Winding its way from the old port area beside the river to the top of a hill, the village exudes a sense of history and timelessness, with well-preserved architecture reflecting its rich medieval past.

Whether simply taking in the panoramic views at the top or relaxing below beside the river, it is an ideal spot to unwind in, all set in the most beautiful of natural surroundings.

Down to the river

Limeuil’s small size and relatively low tourist traffic makes it an excellent place to escape the crowds and enjoy a moment of absolute relaxation.

At the meeting point of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers, Limeuil borders a lovely beach where you can start off a canoeing trip, splash around in the water or hire a mountain bike for exploring.

In the 19th century it was a thriving port for the river trade ploughed by the gabare boats that used it to transport goods in and out of the area. It is now an ideal place to seek some serenity besides or on the water.

Through the city gates

Still visible today, there are three arched gates in the defensive walls in the remnants of the ramparts that surrounded the town.

You can explore the village along its historic streets, admiring the beauty of the yellow stoned houses and high steep pitched stone roofs typical of the architecture of the Périgord Noir.

The town is also home to a variety of arts and crafts shops including local potters and glassblowers. A picture postcard village that makes for the most pleasant of strolls.

Jardins Panoramiques de Limeuil

A must-do while in Limeuil is a trip up to the Jardins Panoramiques. Situated above the town with majestic views over the rivers below, these gardens are set in 2 hectares of English-styled grounds.

A good place for kids to run around, it has some unique features including a water garden, medieval garden, insect garden and even a witches’ garden.
