Ségur-le-Château

The medieval charm of the Upper Valley

Ségur-le-Château’s name, meaning “safe place,” reflects its origins as a fortress built for protection. But beyond its defensive walls, the village holds a wealth of stories and remarkable architecture from its heydays as a major judicial hub, securing its place as one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.

On the Auvézère River

Ségur-le-Château, up in the green hills of the Corrèze, is a village that captivates with its rich history and picturesque charm.

Set on a peninsula formed by a loop in the Auvézère River, this small medieval town offers a glimpse into the past with its noble houses, historic lanes and the imposing remains of a once-mighty castle. Officially listed among “The Most Beautiful Villages in France” Ségur-le-Château is more than just a pretty face – it’s a place steeped in history, with stories to tell around every corner.

A Stronghold for the Lords of Limoges

Ségur-le-Château’s history is closely tied to its strategic location. Perched on a steep spur overlooking the Auvézère, it was the ideal “safe place” for the Viscounts of Limoges to build their fortified castle in the 12th century. Though the castle is now in ruins, with only the keep still standing, it once played a central role in protecting the region.

From the 15th to the 18th century, Ségur-le-Château experienced a golden age as the seat of the Court of Appeals. This judicial center dispensed justice across 361 lordships, and the village flourished with the construction of grand noble homes, many of which still stand today.

Strolling Through Ségur-le-Château

The best way to experience Ségur-le-Château is on foot, meandering through its narrow streets filled with half-timbered houses and medieval turrets. The village’s riverside square, shaded by chestnut trees, is the perfect spot to pause and enjoy this peaceful atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the Tour Saint-Laurent, a historic residence that showcases the architectural grandeur of the 15th and 16th centuries. Nearby, the Tour du Guet and the Henri IV houses impress with their turrets, spiral staircases, and monumental fireplaces – reminders of the village’s prestigious past.

At the top of the village a walk up to the castle ruins rewards visitors with sweeping views of the village and the surrounding countryside. Along the way, Notre-Dame chapel and a Renaissance house offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this fortress home.

A Village Alive with Art and Culture

Ségur-le-Château’s idyllic setting has long inspired artists, and its vibrant cultural scene continues to thrive.
Every summer in August, the village hosts “Les Peintres dans la Rue Font la Fête”, a lively event where painters set up their easels in the streets and along the riverbanks.

Ségur-le-Château is also home to the last remaining porcelain painter in the area, carrying on the tradition of fine craftsmanship that the region is known for.

Markets and Local Flavours

In the summer months, Ségur-le-Château takes on a festive air with its Monday evening farmers’ market.

Held in the village square beside the Auvézère river, this lively market is a highlight for both locals and visitors. Fresh produce, regional specialties, and artisanal goods are on offer, and you can even eat your purchases on-site for a truly authentic experience. Long tables are set up in the square, inviting everyone to sit down and enjoy a convivial meal together.

The market is a celebration of local culture and a great way to sample the flavours of the region. From hearty cheeses to freshly baked bread, it’s an opportunity to connect with the community while indulging in the best of Corrèze’s culinary traditions.
