Histoire d'Eau au Pays des Pierres

A ramble punctuated by a wealth of natural and man-made heritage, from the mediaeval town of Martel via the Romanesque church of Murel to the mill and resurgent stream of l'Oeil de la Doue. The Causse de Martel, green and undulating, provides a wide variety of geological features. Verdant landscapes of woods and meadows alternate with "caussenard" areas which are stonier, and deep, narrow valleys like that of Le Vignon. The limestone, left over from a long-ago maritime past, is omnipresent, both in the natural landscape and in local architecture. Rainwater never remains on the surface. It wears away the stone and fashions unique landscapes.
