As well as some remarkable viewpoints, under the chestnut trees you'll find an old path edged with standing stones and even a strange menhir on a hilltop... A chapel was built on the initiative of a parish priest, starting in 1873, on the Mont Saint Joseph above the village of Lagineste. Crowds attended the annual diocesan pilgrimage, first held in 1881, especially on the feast of St. Joseph, patron saint of workers. This pilgrimage corresponds to a resurgence in the 19th C. of devotion to Joseph and the Virgin, considered by the Church to be models of the Christian life. Pope Pius IX proclaimed Joseph as Patron of the Catholic church in 1870, and fixed 19th March as the date of his feast.
